The data geeks recommended the use of a customer relationship management (CRM) system to manage members. They noted that there are many options (hundreds or even thousands) in every vertical including non-profits. Obviously, it is preferable to choose one that supports the needs of museum today as well as in the medium term (to avoid the need to relearn how to use a particular system). They Talked about high-end donor management systems (although the museum is unlikely ever to be able to afford these), as well as more “cut price” solutions.
Next step for the museum is to have a more in depth discussion with one or more of the “Data for Good” participants, to tease out more detailed requirements.

    Cheers,

    Sample explanation email (Sep)
The idea is to get data folks and NGOs together to find ways to help them with data questions. It would be a couple hours in an evening where the NGOs could present their issue and the data folks would discuss possible approaches.
At the event last Thur we had Kathrine Mansfield Birthplace, who were looking for help finding a system to manage their membership and fundraising. And Summer of Tech, who were looking for ways to present info about their graduates to prospective employees.
The set up for the event is pretty simple. It runs for 2 hours from 6-8pm with beer and pizza provided. The organizations comes to event with a question and do a small presentation about who they are, what they do, and what their issue is. Once all the orgs present, the people in the audience (techy or interested people), split themselves into groups to go work on each org's question for about 45min. At the end we bring them back together and each group does a short presentation about what they talked about, options and next steps.
The orgs and participants can then exchange contact details and organize any further work if they want.
    It's basically a free brainstorming/consulting session.
